The skin is the largest sensory organ of the body and provides a multitude of input data from our environment, both conscious and unconscious, which is essential for the body to assess and utilize in order to preserve health and safety. However, the skin is not simply for receiving information. It also provides crucial information in the form of feedback which can be used. For example, red, hot, painful or weeping skin attracts our conscious attention. More subtle feedback however, can be perceived only with extremely sensitive monitors. The EKG assesses electrical feedback from the heart, the EEG electrical feedback from the brain. Both of these machines sense their feedback through the skin. In a similar way, the scanner collects information from all body systems which can be analysed and used.
